The Atlantic Philanthropies Award Pension Rights Center $6 Million Grant
WASHINGTON – As part of its commitment to improving the lives of older adults, The Atlantic Philanthropies have awarded the Pension Rights Center a $6 million grant over five years to support the Center’s work to promote secure, adequate, and equitable retirement income for all Americans. The grant is the largest ever for the Center and demonstrates a growing awareness of the importance and urgency of retirement income issues.
“The Center works tirelessly and effectively to ensure that older adults will have the income they need to live independently and to engage fully in society,” said Laura Robbins, head of the U.S. Program on Aging at The Atlantic Philanthropies. “We are impressed by the Center’s expertise, its long track record of representing the interests of retirees, and its vision for the future.”
Founded in 1976, the Pension Rights Center is the nation’s only consumer organization dedicated solely to protecting and promoting the retirement income security of American workers, retirees and their families. As an independent, nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, the Center works to ensure that workers receive the retirement benefits that they have earned though pension counseling and legal assistance initiatives. The Center also protects pension rights by strengthening current laws, while working to develop more comprehensive programs for the future. Most recently, the Center released the final recommendations of the Conversation on Coverage, a six-year public policy initiative that developed common-ground proposals to increase the number of workers covered by pensions and retirement savings plans.
“The Atlantic Philanthropies’ grant will greatly enhance our ability to build a nationwide network of pension assistance services, protect workers’ pension rights, and find short- and long-term solutions to the nation’s retirement income problems,” said Karen Ferguson, director of the Center. “The foundation’s recognition of retirement income as a priority issue could not have come at a more critical time.”
The Atlantic Philanthropies are dedicated to bringing about lasting change in the lives of disadvantaged and vulnerable people through grant-making.
